How to start a blog? I know that it’s not easy if you don’t have any IT background. I felt a little bit lost myself, that’s why I’ve decided to share these few first steps with you.
How to start a blog – choosing a blogging Platform
First thing you have to do to start a blog is decide which blogging platform you want to use. I will recommend you WordPress which I am using, because it is one of the major platforms, so it has a lot of plug-ins and you get a lot of support. You will find also a lot of video tutorials on YouTube recorded by people who struggled with the same issues as you. But watch out, choose wordpress.org, not wordpress.com. These are to different sites. I did this mistake myself. I started with wordpress.com and then quickly changed to WordPress.org.
The major difference is that with wordpress.org you are the one, who’s hosting your blog. And this is very important because only then you are the owner of the content on your site. You can also choose your domain name and don’t have the .wordpress.com ending.
Of course you’ll have to bare additional costs of hosting, which is free on wordpress.com. But if you are thinking seriously about your blog and especially if you intend to earn money on it , your own hosting is the only option.
How to start a blog – Finding a host
A web host is where your site/ blog will ”stand”. You will be the owner of it but you will have to pay to the host provider for keeping it online. There are many international host companies or regional companies that operate on specific markets, so you have a freedom of choice.
How to start a blog – Register a domain
The name of the domain should either be connected with the content on your site or with your personal brand. But you can of course choose whatever name you like that is not already taken.
How to start a blog – install WordPress
Most of the times it’s an automatic installation provided by the host, so all you have to do is click on WordPress icon I n your administration panel.
Once you have WordPress installed you have to select your blog theme. There is quite a wide range of free themes. Many people recommend Twenty Sixteen but you can make the decision for yourself. You can also buy a paid theme. It is especially recommended for people who intend to sell some kind of products on their pages,. With the paid themes you will have access to landing pages that are especially designed for that purpose. Another benefit of the paid theme is the support you get. There are regular updates and you will have access to tutorials etc. You will also have more possibilities to customize your blog.
