I am sure you have heard about storytelling. You also probably realize that it is a powerful concept. But do you actually use it to convince potential clients to buy your products? If you are among the people who still miss out on that opportunity, that’s the article for you! ;
The power of stories
So why are stories so powerful? Well, that’s because they create emotions. And emotions are the key factor in the decision-making process. That’s why the best salespeople use stories to convince customers to their products.
Facts tell stories sell
Think about it for a moment. There is such a wide and easily accessible range of products. Especially on the Internet. There are many shops/ sellers selling the same things. Why would somebody purchase from you and not from another person? You have to differentiate from the competition. And a good story can help you to connect with your audience. It has the force to motivate and inspire!
Your personal story
There is one sentence that I hear a lot since I’ve started to sell products. We tend to buy from people who we know, like a trust. I have to admit, that there is a lot of truth in it. If you want to sell a product and you are able to deliver a story based on your own experiences showing why this product is good, then you have a lot bigger chances to succeed. Your audience will connect with you. But remember don’t tell them just any story. It must always be connected with their problem or with the goal that they want to achieve.
When to tell stories
When? Whenever it’s possible. We have access to so many tools. The most powerful after personal contact is video. It enables you to show your face, show your emotions and your audience can have some idea about what kind of person you are. You can use video on any stage of the online sales process.
You can also use stories in emails. Some people have really amazing skills when it comes to copywriting. They can create very emotional emails. You read them and you are literally moved and want to take action, buy the product. Straight away.
But…I can’t tell stories
Oh yes, you can! I understand that storytelling can be difficult at the beginning if you’re not a born speaker. But it is a skill that you can acquire. All you have to do is practice, practice and…yes practice 😉 It will come with time, believe me. So don’t get discouraged at the very beginning. It’s the same as with public speeches. Some people are born speakers and some have to do it many times before they become comfortable in front of a big crowd.
My personal experience
My personal experience with stories was also not the easiest one. I had to go out of my comfort zone. I did not like the idea of sharing my personal experiences in front of a bunch of strangers. So, although I realized how powerful this strategy was, I was not using it. Until one day I thought to my self “oh come on, give it a try” 😉 And I started to work on it. I admit it felt a bit awkward at the beginning, but now it’s completely normal. And I’ve noticed that since I’ve started to show myself, my ‘true me’, people are actually connecting with me!
And it is a great feeling.
- understand your audience’s needs
- tell your personal story
- use all the available tools
- create emotions
- overcome the awkwardness by practice
- and yes, practice as often as you can
